IGCSE English Tutoring in the UAE — First Language, Second Language and Edexcel
"IGCSE English" is a family of qualifications, not one exam. First Language English, English as a Second Language, English Literature and Edexcel English Language each have different papers, different skills and different mark schemes. Revision material for one actively misleads students preparing for another.
In the UAE, where many students are bilingual, the question of which English exam is right matters as much as how to prepare for it.

The 2024 change most families miss: Cambridge 0510 (ESL) removed Core and Extended tiering from 2024. All candidates now sit the same papers and can achieve any grade from A to G. Past papers from 2023 and earlier still build useful skills, but they no longer reflect the exam's structure — practise with the 2024 format onwards.
Where marks are actually lost
- Wrong materials. Using 0500 writing techniques for 0510 tasks, or Literature essay plans for Language papers. The skills overlap; the mark schemes don't.
- Reading: explaining effect. Students identify a technique but don't explain what it does to the reader — which is where the marks are.
- Writing: form, audience and purpose. A strong piece in the wrong register loses marks. Planning before writing is the single most reliable fix.
- Summary tasks. Copying rather than condensing in one's own words.

Frequently asked questions
Should my child take First Language or Second Language English?
It depends on how the student uses English, not only on which seems easier. We can give an honest view after the assessment — the school makes the entry decision.
Is IGCSE ESL still tiered?
No. From 2024, Cambridge 0510 has no Core or Extended tiers; all candidates sit the same papers.
Can we use old past papers?
For skills practice, yes. For exam structure, use papers from the current format — for 0510, from 2024 onwards.
Is English Literature included?
Literature (0475) is a separate subject with set texts. Tell us if your child takes it and we'll confirm tutor availability.
